Get all the latest news on what happened to the King of Pop at his rented home in the classy Los Angeles neighborhood of Holmby Hills.

Jackson died at UCLA Medical Center after Paramedics tried to revive Jackson at his home for almost 45 minutes, then raced him to the hospital, where doctors continued to try and revive him. When the news spread, hundreds of fans flooded to the Medical Center in the hope he would pull through, within 30 minutes they learned of his death.

Jackson is ranked alongside Elvis Presley and the Beatles as the biggest pop sensations of all time. He united two of music’s biggest names when he was briefly married to Presley’s daughter, Lisa Marie. Jackson’s sudden death immediately evoked comparisons to that of Presley himself, who died at age 42 in 1977.

Jermaine Jackson, one of Michael’s brothers, spoke on behalf of his family at UCLA medical centre, where the singer was taken. He said doctors had tried to resuscitate the star for more than an hour before declaring him dead. He said: “My brother, the legendary king of pop Michael Jackson, passed away … it is believed he suffered cardiac arrest at home”. Jermaine, a convert to Islam, concluded: “Allah be with you Michael always. I love you.”

Many tributes from the music and entertainment world have flooded in.

Long term friend Uri Geller, has said: “I’m just devastated, very, very sad. I pray that his soul is up there now. I’m still trying to hold on to the glimmer that it is not true. It is too surreal for me to absorb that Michael is no longer with us.”

Quincy Jones, the music production genius behind many of Jackson’s most famous songs, has expressed his sadness at the singer’s death. “I’m absolutely devastated,” Jones said. “I just don’t have the words … I’ve lost my little brother today and part of my soul has gone with him.”

Madonna, a fellow 20th-century superstar who continued performing into middle-age, has expressed her condolences. “I can’t stop crying over the sad news,” she said. “I’ve always admired Michael Jackson – the world has lost one of its greats, but his music will live on forever. My heart goes out to his three children and other members of his family. God bless.”

Celine Dion, the singer, has given her reaction. She told the veteran CNN presenter Larry King: “I’m overwhelmed by this tragedy. I have to say to you that Michael Jackson’s been an idol for me all my life. I remember being in in my house when I was very, very young and having his posters above my bed.”

Sir Paul McCartney, one of the few entertainers to have enjoyed a comparable career, has said: “It’s so sad and shocking.” Sir Paul, who dueted with Jackson, added: “I feel privileged to have hung out and worked with Michael. He was a massively talented boy man with a gentle soul. His music will be remembered forever and my memories of our time together will be happy ones.”

American tennis players at Wimbledon have been reacting as they wake in London. Serena Williams, the women’s number two seed, posted on her Twitter page: “My heart goes out to the entire Jackson Family.” Meanwhile Andy Roddick, the men’s number six seed, posted to his Twitter page: “oh my lord….. michael jackson died…….. RIP sad and surreal”, later adding: “regardless of what u think of him he was completely revolutionary and will be missed”.
